Awards for Excellence were presented June 4, 2009 at the

Kansas Preservation Alliance's 30th Anniversary Celebration.

 

 Rehabilitation Medallion Award

Castle Tea Room - Lawrence, KS

Castle Tea Room Project in Lawrence, Kansas...

The Castle Tea Room Project in Lawrence received a Rehabilitation Medallion Award.  Built in 1894, the building was threatened when it was purchased by Libuse Kriz-Fiorito in the 1940s. It was rehabilitated by the Libuse Kriz-Fiorito Historic Foundation.

Junction City Opera House - Junction City, KS

Junction City Opera House in Junction City, Kansas...

The Junction City Opera House in Junction City received a Rehabilitation Medallion Award.  Constructed in 1898 and donated to the city in 1982, the building was rehabilitated to provide a venue for arts and entertainment activities.

Northeast Junior High - Kansas City, KS

Northeast Junior High Project in Kansas City, Kansas...

The Northeast Junior High Project in Kansas City, Kansas received a Rehabilitation Medallion Award.  Designed and built in 1922-23, the former school was rehabilitated as an income-adjusted elderly housing project.

Chase County Courthouse - Cottonwood Falls, KS

Chase County Courthouse Interior Project in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas...

The Chase County Courthouse Interior Project in Cottonwood Falls received a Rehabilitation Medallion Award Rehabilitation restored the courtroom and preserved character-defining features while making the building usable as a modern courthouse.

Honorable Mention Award for Rehabilitation

Eagles Lodge #132 - Wichita, KS

Eagles Lodge #123 Project in Wichita, Kansas..

The Eagles Lodge #132 Project in Wichita received an Honorable Mention Award for Rehabilitation.  Constructed in 1916 and enlarged in 1921, the building was vacant and threatened with demolition before it was rehabilitated.

Lanesfield School - Edgerton, KS

Lanesfield School Project in Edgerton, Kansas...

The Lanesfield School Project, Edgerton vicinity, received an Honorable Mention Award for Rehabilitation.  Work on the 1869 building included stone masonary restoration, window replacement and exterior wood restoration.

Minisa Bridge - Wichita, KS

Minisa Bridge Project in Wichita, Kansas...

The Minisa Bridge Project in Wichita received an Honorable Mention Award for Preservation.  To preserve the colored Carthalite ornamented parapets required construction of a new bridge within the shell of the original structure.

The Thayer State Bank Project in Thayer received a Certificate of Honor for Rehabilitation.  The project included brick masonry repointing and restoration of historic wooden windows.

Fairfax Bluff's Apartments - Kansas City, KS

Fairfax Bluff's Apartment Project in Kansas City, Kansas...

The Fairfax Bluffs Apartments Project in Kansas City, Kansas received a Certificate of Honor for Rehabilitation.  Constructed in 1943 to house civilian and government workers, this 48-building complex was adapted for contemporary affordable housing.

Pot Rack - Leavenworth, KS

Pot Rack Project in Leavenworkth, Kansas...

The Pot Rack Project in Leavenworth received a Certificate of Honor for Rehabilitation.  This commercial building constructed in the late nineteenth century was completely rehabilitated.

Preservation Advocacy Awards

Preservation Advocacy Awards were presented to the University of Kansas Campus Heritage Plan, Dr. Patricia J. O’Brien, the Abilene Heritage Homes Association, Pedro Irigonegaray and Shelley Hickman Clark, attorneys for the Friends of Bethany Place.

The University of Kansas Campus Heritage Plan is viewed as the first step in building a new culture of stewardship of historic landscapes and buildings on campus.  Funded by the Getty Foundation and completed in March, 2008, the plan is available at www.dcm.ju.edu/planning.

The Architects & Buildings of Manhattan, Kansas by Dr. Patricia O'Orien..

Dr. Patricia J. O’Brien organized an extensive database of information about historic buildings in Manhattan.  In 2008, she published "The Architects and Buildings of Manhattan, Kansas".

The Abilene Heritage Homes Association hosts an annual holiday tour of historic homes and has carried out a number of other programs to help preserve the historic character of Abilene.
